Founded in 1796, Concord North Carolina is the county seat for Cabarrus County, east of Charlotte. It played significant roles in the development in the Charlotte region into what it is today. Starting in the early 1800's, it was the site of the first gold rush in the United States. Today, the Reed Gold Mine still operates and is available for tours. It was the Concord Presbytery that commissioned Davidson College in what is now Davidson North Carolina. Following the Civil War, Concord was a city centered around the textile industry. Fieldcrest Cannon was founded in Concord by J.W. Cannon (his house still stands at 65 North Union Street) and it was home to the first African-American owned cotton mill Coleman Manufacturing.
Today, Concord is a mix of the old and the new with a very historic downtown district with some of the oldest residences in the Piedmont region as well as new neighborhoods in the suburbs closest to Charlotte. It is home to the Charlotte Motor Speedway as well as a number of NASCAR race teams and their crews. Concord also is home to the over 200 stores in the Concord Mills Mall, which boasts more than 1 million square feet of retail space, a movie theater and numerous restaurants around the property. The Concord Regional Airport offers regional shuttle service through Allegiant Air, charter flights, and FBO services to private pilots.
